My path in life has been direct
1.
Growing up in Dominica, I studied relentlessly as there were few distractions—no malls or theaters, only academics.
2.
Initially, I pursued a career as a scientist, earning degrees in biology, microbiology, and chemistry to focus on cancer research.
3.
Passing the College of Nursing one day, I discovered I could blend research and patient interaction which changed my path.
4.
I boldly enrolled in an accelerated nursing program, earning a Bachelor of Nursing and a Master’s in Public Health simultaneously.
5.
My first role as a neonatal nurse showed me the depth of care and connection required, igniting my passion for patient-centered work.
6.
Determined to deepen my expertise, I pursued both a Ph.D. and Doctor of Nursing Practice, balancing dual doctoral studies.
7.
I became a leader in nursing education and health care, eventually serving as both the dean and chief nurse executive at UF Health.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me
It's very expensive to pursue nursing. I had to work at the same time as I was going to school, which was very difficult.
Nursing school is already challenging but even more so for diverse students. As with all professions, there's an implicit bias, which means you're going to have to work harder to show your competence and expertise.
